Readers ask author Jonathan Pearce, "Why Did You Write Verga's Blessing"?

Well, here you are maybe ready to read Verga's Blessing. What brought you to it? Maybe the same thing that brought me to writing the story. Which was, I wanted to see how a vampire might do in Balona, a place where people are likely to believe strange things, but not actively support anything that isn't tasty, profitable, cheap, and plentiful.

Besides, I wanted to make sure that readers understand that not all publishers are kind and benevolent, interested only in helping writers become rich and famous. Some publishers may be vampires, sucking the blood right out of a writer while the writer naps and listens to sweet Success Music.

Here is Patella, a young woman with longings and urges. She wants to be famous and respected and accepted and loved. Most of all, maybe, she wants to be rich, so that she can tell any mean person to buzz off. Mrs. Pezmyer, for one.

Patella may not be much of a poet (yet), but she's got ambition.

I think Verga's Blessing is pretty convincing. If you get down to reading the book, you'll find that Patella's got some possibilities--and that Verga doesn't get stabbed with that wooden stake after all. Vergas always have a future. (That's where they live.)
