(NOTE: In Vietnamese tradition, one is referred to by one's given name rather than by one's family name.)

The late Master Tri was born in Vietnam and studied under the revered Chiu Chuk-Kai, eighth-generation grand-master of the Chinese t'ai-mantis system. In addition to his  kung-fu study, Master Tri was also a practitioner of   pa kua chang, hsing-i chuan, chi kung, and Yang style  t'ai chi chuan. Master Tri's character and skills were recognized in his also earning high rank in Kano-style judo and in Goju-kai karate.

Master Tri also studied under the founder of aikido,  O-Sensei Morihei Ueshiba. O-Sensei was so impressed with Master Tri's remarkable personal qualities that he bestowed upon Master Tri the honorary name “Ten Shin”  --pure spirit.

Founder and director of California's Budo Educational Center in Sacramento, Master Tri authored the best-selling books BEYOND THE KNOWN: The Ultimate Goal of the Martial Arts; TOWARD THE UNKNOWN: Martial Artist, What Shall You Become?  and   BEGINNING T'AI CHI, all published by Charles E. Tuttle Company.

Beyond the Known is a series of parables about the martial-arts quest; it is a meditation on the art of discipleship. The message of the book urges teachers and practitioners of all martial arts to question their own motives and stretch themselves beyond the dazzle of awards, beyond repetition of techniques; and ultimately, to go beyond the known.

“Beyond the Known explores the subtlety and depth of oriental philosophy through beautifully woven anecdotes about a martial arts master and his disciples. Anyone, martial artist or not, will be captivated by the beauty, grace, and universal truths contained in the narrative.” --Stanley Pranin,  Aiki News Magazine

TOWARD THE UNKNOWN:
Martial Artist, What Shall You Become?

Toward the Unknown is the second in the two-volume series of parables about the martial-arts quest; it is the sequel to Master Tri's Beyond the Known. A careful reading of the text will lead teachers and practitioners of all martial arts to examine their motives, to go beyond superficial prizes and awards, to rise above a focus on fighting technique, and ultimately to transcend the known.

The stories included in the book chronicle the exploits of Master Lam, the greatest fighter and teacher of his time. Lam, following the examples of his late master, Tai-Ahn, seeks to create an environment in which the student might be both challenged physically and enlightened spiritually. He teaches by example, following classical methodology, which focuses on moral, ethical, and spiritual growth in addition to technical competence.

As the exciting and spiritually uplifting sequel to Beyond the Known, this book--through philosophy and fiction--leads the reader toward the unknown.

A martial arts practitioner and commentator wrote recently:

“Master Tri Dang's view of the teaching and learning of martial arts as reflected in Toward the Unknown may discompose some instructors. One hopes that those whose interests in the martial arts are more pecuniary than artistic are the ones who will take offense. Master Tri was a purist in the most profound sense of the word--a man pure in mind, body, and spirit. He sought all his life as a teacher to create an environment in which the student was physically stressed and spiritually loved. He strove to teach from the classical orientation in order to address Western attitudes that more often than not focus on technique, rank, and a satisfying bottom line. Master Tri's writings reflect his passionate beliefs which if internalized might enable us to rescue the martial arts from the slough of gratuitous violence into which much of today's film and television have cast them.” --Jonathan Pearce

BEGINNING
T'AI CHI

Master Tri Dang's  BEGINNING T'AI CHI is the master's final book.

More than a martial art, t'ai chi is also a holistic method of self-healing, a form of moving meditation, and a philosophical way of life. Health, relaxation, and self-defense are but a few of the many reasons cited for practicing this traditional exercise, which was created by a Taoist sage eight centuries ago. Now a recreational activity practiced by millions of people worldwide, t'ai chi, with its physical, psychological, and spiritual benefits widely recognized and praised, is the fastest-growing martial art in the world today.

In this handy guide, Master Tri, who taught the arts for more than 30 years, illustrates the “Simplified T'ai Chi” form, a set of movements specifically designed by China's Ministry of Physical Culture and Sports for beginners. Master Tri's concise but lucid descriptions and drawings highlight the spiritual essence of the form and at the same time display its graceful simplicity.

With more than 160 clear EASY-TO-FOLLOW ILLUSTRATIONS, this excellent volume is the ultimate introduction to the world of T'ai Chi.
