His spousal-abused dad is no help, so 15-year-old Joseph Oliver Kuhl's immediate life goals are to get his driver's license and become the youngest ever member of James Bond's spy crew in British Secret Service. But his mean mom won't approve of driver's training. Joe therefore calls upon the strength of his Kuhl Blood (his Sang Froyd) to train himself in spy skills with the aid of correspondence school manuals. He practices tradecraft and shoplifting in and around his hometown of Balona with mixed results.

   Zack smiles, revealing not only the huge wad of pink Dubble Bubble, but also bits of lunchtime spinach clinging to his braces top and bottom. Most kids with braces can't chew Dubble Bubble, but Zack brags that he has mastered the craft by generating lots of spit while chewing.
    "Daddy says when I get old enough he'll let Coach Kork teach me how to drive. Just two more years. Actually he said he'd let Coach start to teach me when I'm 15-and-a-half, but." Zack smiles this time like a cat, squinching his little eyes almost shut, his thin lips curving up just a little on each side, no braces showing, a self-satisfied look.
   Exactly because of that smirk, Joe decides he won't brief Zack on the mission from which he's just returned. He wishes he could tell somebody about it, and about the manual recently delivered in a plain brown wrapper by postman Mr. Primsnall. Joe wishes he could confide in somebody about his noble and daring ambition.
