Joe has had dreams that have almost convinced him that Balona is experiencing an invasion by ghosts. He has suffered some close calls suggesting that perhaps he is being targeted by evil spirits. Of course, Cousin Zack won't believe a word of it--until a barbecue in which the meats appear suspicious and the drinks doctored.

Why Ghosts? The score on our SMUTSCALE INDEX
[0--10] for screamers Ghosts of Balona is a modest "3," not for "smut," as such, but Doctor Alferd Packer's huge appetite suggests something ravenous, and the meats for his barbecue harvested possibly not from domestic animals.

Here is a passage from Ghosts of Balona. The scene takes place in Joe's bedroom. Joe has been visited by a beautiful young woman with long blonde hair. The mysterious young woman floats and glows....

"Say, maybe we could snuggle while you're telling me?"
"I do not comprehend the word snuggle, Joseph. Does it perchance involve your wrapping your arms around me and breathing into my ear, eksedra?"
   "Something like that. Yeh."
"I have heard about that sort of thing. It might prove to be pleasantly warming, but I do not think it is appropriate in the present circumstances. Snuggling with you would interfere with the remainder of the message I bring."
"Well, who is the message from anyways?"
"I do not know. I know only that I am the messenger and that you must listen carefully or suffer grave consequences."
   "So, okay. What's the message?"
She hmmmd. "What with the distraction, I almost forgot, but now I remember." She giggled, a hollow sort of giggle, but nice.
I mentioned, "In the park and last time you showed up you smelt like sweetpeas."
"Yes, I do carry a fragrance wherever I go."
"But you don't smell like sweetpeas tonight."
   "No?"
"You smell like peanut butter."     more
